Happy Lunar New Year!
Are you looking for something to do to celebrate Lunar new year? Join the Manitoba Chinese Youth Committee (MCYC) this Chinese Lunar New Year activity to learn about, and celebrate Chinese culture! This year, for Chinese New Year, the MCYC will be hosting a family friendly Cooking and Crafts experience with emphasis on traditional Chinese food items. If you enjoy foods, sweets, crafts, or history, you’ll have lots of fun with us.
What we’re doing
- Teaching everyone how to make Chinese dumplings (vegan option available). Each voucher reserves the ingredients for 8 dumplings!
- Teaching everyone how to make Tanghulus (candied fruit skewers) with a variety of fruit options such as grapes, kiwi, strawberries and more!
- Arts and crafts creating Chinese decorations associated with Lunar New Years such as paper lanterns, snakes, dragons and more.
Event Schedule
- 2-7 PM: The entire event. Throughout this time, the arts and crafts will be constantly available with knowledgeable volunteers helping teach anyone who’s interested on some paper crafts!
- 3-5 PM: The tanghulu making experience! Throughout this time, we’ll have a volunteer teach how to make candied fruit skewers, also known as tanghulus. We’ll handle all the dangerous stuff, and there will be constant help available!
- 5-7 PM: Throughout these two hours will be the dumpling making experience! Similar to the tanghulu experience, we’ll have volunteers give step-by-step instructions (cooking class style) on how to make delicious dumplings. We’ll pre-emptively prepare the filling and dough so you don’t have to. There’s also a vegan friendly option!
About Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in Chinese culture. It marks the beginning of the new year based on the lunar calendar and is a time for families to reunite, honor ancestors, and welcome new beginnings.
Dumplings are a traditional dish during the Lunar New Year, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. Their shape resembles ancient Chinese gold ingots, and it is believed that eating dumplings will bring good fortune in the coming year.
Tanghulus are candied fruit skewers that are often enjoyed during the festival. They represent happiness and good luck. The bright red color of the candied coating is considered auspicious and symbolizes joy and celebration.
